Anabolic steroids
Anabolic Steroids: What are they?
Anabolic steroids are drugs that are synthetically made to mimic male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone that is in charge of developing male sexual characteristics. The synthetic version of testosterone and its many derivatives make up the many compounds that have been popularly used as performance enhancing drugs. Testosterone, deca, tren, dbol, tbol, primo, masteron, var, and winny are just some of the popular compounds derived from the male sex hormone to cause anabolic and androgenic effects in the user. When injected, anabolics bind to the androgen receptor effecting muscle mass. An increase in the production of proteins and a reduction of recovery time by blocking the effects of stress hormones are the main two factors that play a vital role in the use of steroid, making the drugs highly sought after by body builders and performance athletes.

What Are the Risks?
There is a fairly long list of common and more serious side effects of anabolics. The use of anabolics may cause acne due to higher estrogen and testosterone levels. Users report a “puberty like” acne returning to their skin. Balding is typical in males who use anabolics due to the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is linked to male pattern baldness. An increase in estrogen due to aromatization of testosterone to estrogen will likely cause weight gain in users and the possibility of female breast development. Users who start young (any age under 23) will stunt their growth as the bones will reach their final fused state when high amounts of testosterone are in their system. Anabolics cause increased red blood production, thickening the blood of the user and increasing the risk of heart disease, blood clots, high blood pressure, and stroke. Most anabolics are hepa-toxic (toxic to the liver) and jaundice/yellowing of the skin can occur due to liver damage. Furthermore, anabolics can cause testicular atrophy (the shrinking of the testicles) due to the bodies shutting down natural testosterone production while on cycle; infertility is also a concern due to such mechanisms. A likely imbalance of estrogen, testosterone, and DHT can cause impotence (inability to get an erection) to users who do not keep a balance of said hormones. It has been shown that the use of anabolic steroids in the younger causes long term damage to the HPTA (the system that regulates hormones in your body) and many younger users end up with low testosterone diagnosis well before they should, causing them to go on testosterone replacement therapy for life. Improper use of anabolic steroids, even in older users, will result in less than optimal natural testosterone recovery.
